Why Supervision and Assessment

The role of every member in the Multidisciplinary team and staff across other services in a health care setting, is important in supporting you to develop your clinical knowledge and skills. It also keeps you , your colleagues and your patients safe.

Supervision and regular constructive feedback provide you an opportunity to understand how you are progressing in practice from week to week. It lays the foundation for you to engage in activities in your area that will refine your skills over time. Supervision also creates a space for you to enhance your critical thinking and reflectively work on areas for development as well as be exposed to good role modelling.

Assessment is a formal arrangement and your opportunity to take your various learning experiences along your placement journey and demonstrate in your patient care activities,  as part of your programme requirements.

Both supervision and assessment rely on a cohesive and collaborative partnership between you , your practice supervisor, practice assessor and any other individual including your patients.

The following NMC link gives an insight into how you should be supervised and assessed in practice:

Other techniques in supervision and prep for your assessments are coaching conversations and peer to peer support.
